Workdays
As seen to the left, an ancient oak by the entrance is freed from buckthorn after
just the second workday, December 2007.
Volunteers cut the thick stands of buckthorn before they killed the lower branches
of the oak by blocking the light. Piles of cut buckthorn can be seen to either
side of the oak.
Workdays are 9-12 am the first and third Saturday of each month.
Winter workdays will be spent clearing buckthorn. Spring will be weeding and some
planting. Fall is collecting seeds and sowing.
- Dress for the weather! Although we won't be working in extreme conditions,
our work can be strenuous. You'll want to wear layers for the most comfort.
Bring sturdy work gloves and protective eyewear.
- We will be providing a limited amount of hand saws,
loppers, and pruners. Bring your own, if you have them.
- You'll need to sign a waiver of liability before starting work. They will be
available when we meet at the nature park.
- There are no washroom facilities at the nature park.
- Water and snacks will be provided.
- Children under the age of 10 will not be allowed to use cutting implements but
they can haul, fetch, learn about and enjoy the great outdoors. We require a
1 child to 1 adult ratio.
- Please check for ticks, chiggers and other creepy-crawlies after each work day
during the growing season.
- Check the website for work dates and changes due to weather.
Thank you for volunteering to help restore the Oak Ridge Marsh Nature Park!
